WHEN it comes to beef on the hoof, South Devons are among the most competitive classes in the cattle rings, with several local herds regularly entering their best stock.
The Northwick Estate at Blockley is rebuilding its herd of South Devons, which was reduced in size because of the problems faced by the beef industry in recent years. It now numbers between 60 and 70 animals and four of these, three adults and a calf, came to the show.
Stockman Alan Clarke was among the many livestock breeders delighted this year's show took place in rather cooler weather than last year's blistering heat - not comfortable if you're a cow or a sheep standing in the sun all day. "It is just about the right temperature this year," he said.
He was also pleased that the judges seemed to like the herd's cattle on show. The herd won a first in the senior bull class with Claudius, who was also named reserve champion. Rosie, a heifer, also won a first in her class.
