PETER Sellers, best-known at the time as the star of the radio programme Variety Bandbox, entertained a Malvern audience in 1950.

He was joined at the Winter Gardens by another well-known radio personality of the time, the singer Sylvia Welling. They were there to entertain the 280 delegates at the annual conference of voluntary workers in the West Midland Region of the National Savings Movement.

Mr G F Williams, vice- chairman of the Savings Movement, told the meeting that seven million people, one in seven of the population, belonged to a savings group.

Of Mr Sellers, the Malvern Gazette's reviewer said: "Peter Sellers - or should we call him 'Crystal Jollybottom' of 'Ray's a Laugh?' - is master of the type of entertainment which calls for quick-fire impressions and humour. His impression of the Italian piccolo-player was a masterpiece.

"His many skits on well-known radio people, as well as politicians were easily recognisable and brought a ready response from the audience".
