WYTHALL villagers found themselves going back to their roots recently as they took part in an attempt a land a place in the record books.
The Wythall Countryside Carers were helping to plant the largest number of trees over a three-day period in a countrywide effort to create a world record for the Guinness Book of Records.
There are existing records for tree planting in 24 hours and a week but not for three days.
The tree planting session from individual groups had to be done between Friday, November 24, and Sunday, November 26, during National Tree Week.
The Wythall Countryside Carers did their planting on the Saturday and, despite appalling weather, managed to plant 350 trees.
County tree warden Roy Pearson said: The weather was really appalling and everybody who turned up got completely soaked.
But we still got a great deal of trees planted. Not only do they look nice but we have hopefully contributed to creating a record.
Kevin Hand, national project manager for the Tree Council said: We decided to do this because we not only wanted to get more trees planted and get people from all over the country involved but we also wanted to get into the record books.
The weather on the Saturday was totally appalling. The people in Wythall did extremely well going out in it and planting a brilliant number of trees.
We don't know what the final result is as it all still has to be verified by Guinness but so far we know we have definitely had over 100,000 trees planted around the country.
