POLICE will be performing roadside checks in Redditch throughout December in an effort to cut the number of drink-drive accidents.

The move comes as part of an annual blitz against drink-driving and motorists will also have their vehicles checked for faults, such as defective tyres.

Supt Howard Topping, head of traffic and operations for West Mercia, said drink-driving was a priority for the force.

He said: The tragedy that drinking can bring families at any time of year is particularly highlighted at Christmas when friends and relatives traditionally get together.

Drinking and driving is now generally seen as a socially irresponsible thing to do but there is still a hard core of motorists who are prepared to put their own and other people's lives in danger by getting behind the wheel after they have been drinking.

Drivers found guilty of drink-driving face a 12-month ban, fines up to £5,000 and six months' imprisonment.

And motorists found with a defective car can face a fixed penalty of up to £60, three penalty points, or disqualification and fines up to £5,000.
