WORCESTER Norton Ladies earned themselves an early Christmas present with an impressive 2-0 win over third-placed Matlock to widen the gap near the top of the Midland Hockey League Division A table.

And they had Jo Walker to thank for setting up the win, her two first half goals enough to wrap up the points.

Worcester began confidently by taking the game to Charnwood with swift interpassing and interchanging to confuse the Matlock defence.

On 18 minutes, at the end of one of these passing movements, Walker spun quickly in the circle and released an open stick shot that beat the keeper at the near post.

Matlock replied with considerable energy and enthusiasm and only a string of excellent saves by keeper Emily Price, having her best game of the season, kept the Derbyshire side at bay.

Worcester then halted the Matlock revival when, after the first shot at a penalty corner was saved, Walker smashed the rebound against the backboard.

To their credit Matlock never gave up but Worcester were always in control with Rachel Creese not only defending superbly but finding the time and space to initiate several penetrating attacks.

Becky Adams, Elaine Sheppard and Becky Handy were also impressive.
