BROMSGROVE Rovers may have to replay their FA Umbro Trophy second round tie at Lancaster City after a numbers mix-up.
Rovers won 1-0 at the Unibond League Premier Division side two weeks ago, but it has since emerged that three Rovers players wore different numbers than those shown on the official teamsheet.
Following a protest from Lancaster, who are demanding a replay, both teams have been summoned to appear at the Football Association's headquarters in London on Monday -- but Rovers are confident they will get away with a fine.
Rovers chief executive Pat Bannister and caretaker boss Eric McManus was not at the game as they were at Derby County negotiating a contract for Bannister's son Patrick.
But Bannister said it was an innocent mistake. "We rang fitness coach Paul Madders, who took charge, to tell him the team, but he gave some of the boys different numbers to what they normally wear under Eric.
"Some of them unfortunately picked up the wrong shirts.
"Our secretary Ray Barrow noticed the problem when Matt Beard got booked in the first half and told the referee at half-time.
"But the referee didn't tell us to change them and then told Lancaster the problem after the match had finished.
"Lancaster sent us a letter saying we deliberately tried to deceive them but it was a mix-up among the players, nothing to do with the officials.
"I am just disappointed that Lancaster are taking that view. No disrespect to them but they are crying over spilt milk -- they lost the game fair and square."
Lancaster secretary Mike Sparks said: "We want the match replayed because we deserve a fair crack of the whip."
Rovers are due to visit Worksop Town, whose team includes former England winger Chris Waddle, in the next round on January 13.
Meanwhile, Rovers are seeking new reserve team bosses and a new first-team physiotherapist. Anyone interested in the posts should contact Pat Bannister at the club on 01527-876949.
