REGARDING Mrs J Turner's letter (You Say, December 7), I would like to say that I, like most drivers, feel public transport is not a real option.
First, there is the prohibitive cost. For example, for my family of four to travel to town and back costs more than £7. For this amount, I could buy a gallon of diesel, go to town and park for four hours at Crowngate. Second, return tickets are not available before 9am - why?
Also, weekly tickets are not available for occasional users. I would like to point to some of the consequences of Mrs Turners plan, such as what to do with all the town car parks? Who will recompense city centre retailers for the inevitable loss of business?
While I agree with Mrs Turner's sentiments, I believe her naivety in these matters shows that she is probably not a driver or car owner and that she has never really taken notice of how much pollution these "environmentally-friendly" buses actually produce in a day.
On some days, I have observed four buses travelling to town in a convoy with perhaps 10 passengers between them. Please Mrs Turner, stick to commenting on things you actually know something about.
