A MAN posing as a council officer tricked his way into an elderly woman's home while an accomplice stole cash, police believe.

The theft happened at about 4pm last Tuesday in Dilwyn Close, Matchborough, when a man called at the victim's home and said there was a problem with the water.

The woman went into the kitchen with the man where she was asked to turn the cold water tap on and clear out some of the items from under the sink.

The man left saying he would return later but when the woman's husband came home they discovered £65 in cash had been taken from a bag in the bedroom.

Police believe a second person sneaked into the home while the woman was occupied in the kitchen and stole the money.

The man was described as white, mid 20s, scruffy-looking with short, dark hair.

He was clean-shaven and seemed to have an Irish-type accent.

He was wearing blue jeans and was described as having an average build.

DC Brian Davies, of Redditch police, said: An elderly woman has been targeted by thieves just prior to Christmas and I would appeal to anybody who saw the man in the area or anything suspicious to call Redditch police.
