HEREFORD MP Paul Keetch turned down an invitation from 10 Downing Street to hear President Bill Clinton speak at Warwick University.

But the Liberal Democrat MP insisted this was not meant as an insult to the outgoing US President.

"Unfortunately I had to attend a funeral in Hereford that morning and the annual presentation of certificates at the Royal National College for the Blind in the afternoon, he says.

No snub

I was very pleased to have been invited and told Downing Street that I could not attend - no snub to President Clinton was meant."

Worcester Labour MP Mike Foster was at the university to hear Mr Clinton.

He was a very impressive politician, he says.

He made the point that the Third Way is not purely a political philosophy.

It is just a way of embracing free markets but at the same time making sure that the welfare of people is central to that.
