6 AS a contribution to the current debate on the naming of bridges, local businessman Barry Potter recently suggested to me that it would reduce confusion if Worcester's central bridge was named after Sir Edward Elgar.
This solution might be less controversial than choosing the name of a worthy councillor for the Southern Link bridge (see below), although it would not preclude it.
Mr Potter further suggested that one could go a step further and rename New Road by calling it Elgar Way or Sir Edward Elgar Way, although I doubt whether cricket fans would be enthusiastic if their beloved New Road ground lost the name by which it is affectionately known well beyond our shores.
If it is thought necessary to name bridges, it is the county council that will make the decision, but the view of citizens expressed through this newspaper would undoubtedly be welcome.
COUNCILLOR MARY DRINKWATER,
Mayor of Worcester.
