6 THE call for the "new" bridge to be named was first made by me in my letter that you published on Tuesday, November 14.

The call was then taken up by Councillor Derek Prodger who suggested naming it "The Carrington Bridge", after the late Councillor Ron Carrington, who was county council Chairman at the time of its building.

Subsequent to my letter, I received a telephone call from Mr Kenneth James, who was the Council's Bridge Engineer at the time. He informed me that on all the council's drawings, the bridge had been referred to as "The Ketch Bridge".

While acknowledging that Mr Carrington did many good things and may be worthy of a permanent memorial, I do believe that it is better to give the bridge a name that reflects its geographical location. When giving people directions, this would be much more meaningful.

"The Ketch Bridge" is one suggestion, but given the current fashion for changing well-respected pub names, that pub, too, may one day see its name changed to something quite inane.

I suggest, therefore, that the council gives serious consideration to naming it "Clerkenleap Bridge", a name that goes with its location.
