A FORMER police social club in the heart of Worcester has moved a step closer to becoming a wine bar.
The former club at Marmion House in Copenhagen Street has been granted a provisional public entertainment licence - despite fears from neighbouring traders that the bar could spell trouble.
A new wine bar could be ready for business by Easter next year following the decision by Worcester City Council's licensing sub-committee.
Members visited the site and listened to evidence for and against the club, during a meeting, which lasted more than two hours at The Guildhall.
Applicant Marijan Madzarevic and his business partner Jenny Wallace told the meeting that the proposed venue would be aimed at providing entertainment for people aged over 25.
It would be open all day catering for lunches for tourists and shoppers, as well as a bar and restaurant entertainment for evening visitors.
But staff from nearby businesses BB Fashions and the camera shop Jessops have both objected to the scheme, complaining about revellers.
Shirley Jones, who runs BB Fashions, said she was worried about her shop.
"I just feel this might not attract the type of customer they say it will and it is the security I am worried about with the people that will be coming during the day and evening," she said.
She added that she was concerned that rubbish from the wine bar could mean rats being attracted to the site.
In a letter, Jessops complained that music could disrupt its business during the daytime and drunk people could pose a security risk in the evening.
A provisional licence was granted on the grounds that CCTV cameras would be installed subject to the approval of the police, as well as door staff, and the premises is linked to the city net radio link.
Fire safety alterations also need to be made subject to the satisfaction of the fire authority.
