IN support of the Tesco proposal to build a supermarket in St John's, Worcester City Council says that it wants to provide the pupils of Christmas Whitehead with "... . a really 21st Century education".
Whatever this slogan means it would have more credibility if members of the council had shown some evidence of their concern for the school - for example, bids to central government for developmental funding before, rather than after Tesco's proposal.
Education policy is now being decided by commercial interests and this is contrary to the democratic principle of state schooling being held accountable to taxpayers.
