A BRAVE Kidderminster girl is looking forward to brighter times in the New Year after being honoured for her courage in coping with a year-long cancer ordeal.
And 15-year-old Vicky Garbett is now officially a 'wonderkid' after scooping a prize in the scheme organised by the Birmingham Midshires Building Society and a Sunday newspaper.
She was among nine youngsters from across the Midlands presented with £150, shopping vouchers and a certificate to mark her bravery after suffering a 12-month bone cancer plight, which included the removal of the tibia in her right leg.
But now Vicky, of Plimsoll Street, is hoping for a happier year ahead, which will include her return to Bewdley High School where she began last year, but missed 12 months learning because of her illness.
Her mother Denise Garbett, who accompanied Vicky to the Wonderkids award ceremony at Birmingham's NEC, said: "The family is so proud of Vicky. She has been through a lot and it's brilliant for her to be rewarded with something like this.
"She was nominated by the folks at the Princess of Wales Children's Hospital where she was treated."
She added: "Even though we hope she is over the worst of things now, Vicky is still undergoing treatment at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in the city.
"But we are delighted she's had this Christmas treat, and it's not such a bad time to win £150 either!"
