MARK Riley put in a superb finish to take Kidderminster Chess Club's traditional Christmas Lightning Tournament Trophy.
With seven points after eight rounds, Maurice Bissell had looked unstoppable but the club secretary faltered in the closing stages and Riley took his chance.
Jim Friar kept in contention until his final round, eventually having to settle for runner-up spot.
Nine-year-old Nicholas Billinge made his debut and beat his father, Clive.
Full scores: Riley 9.5, Friar 9, Bissell and Frank Pickett 7.5, Paul Thomas and John Wrench 7, John Varilone, Bill Pugh and Gerald Link 5.5, Ken Durnell 5, Peter Kitchen and Clive Billinge 3.5, Nicholas Billinge 2.
