East Glos 2, Bretforton 6
PROMOTION was assured after Bretforton's six-hit Severn League show at Cheltenham last Saturday.
The club's penultimate league match of a successful campaign didn't always go to plan as East Glos took an early lead.
That would appear to be the village side's way of approaching matches as they seem to want to set a challenge before getting down to business.
This they did as Jane Wheeler levelled matters from a Dawn Thatcher pass and it was 2-1 at the break when Lisa Workman struck home after some slick skills at a short corner.
Unfortunately for the hosts, Bretforton weren't satisfied with their efforts and they soon set the trend for a better second half showing when Workman bagged her second.
"Super sub" Julie Hall, who later shared the player of the match vote with Thatcher, then made it 4-1 but some contentious umpiring hindered the leaders' frustration and their opponents saw a chance to hit back.
However, the visiting defence gave nothing away until after Andrea Cole had scored her side's fifth.
Bretforton, though, had the final say when Gilly Wright played the ball past the goalkeeper and Hall just beat a defender to deflect the ball onto the blackboard to complete a memorable team performance.
A week's recovery from the evening celebrations should ensure a fit squad for this weekend's final league match at Cirencester.
On Sunday, the club will return to Cheltenham to join fellow county teams for a tournament.
