WHO invented Mothers' day asks Arthur Robinson of Harvington? (Evesham Journal, March 29).

I have it on good authority that Mothers' Day is an American custom, dating back to the after math of the American Civil War. This was at a time when mothers from the recently opposing sides, unions confederate, attempted to bring a little harmony into all their lives.

Our traditional English Mothering Sunday, the fourth Sunday in Lent, was a time when girls usually in domestic service, often some distance from home, were allowed the time off to visit their homes. On the walk home they gathered wild flowers to present to their mothers.

In my Sunday school days (many years ago) after attending Sunday School, we children were encouraged to pick posies of wild flowers to give to our mothers.

No commercialisation in those days.
