Evesham Utd 4, Malvern Town 0
ANOTHER game will have to be tagged on to United's busy schedule after Tuesday's Worcester Royal Infirmary Cup defeat of Malvern.
A rich mixture of youth and experience accounted for the Banks's Brewery League side but it needed the rare sight of all three substitutes scoring as four second half goals sealed a quarter final tie at home to Kidderminster.
Phil Mullen, watching from the stands, was delighted with the showing, particularly the efforts of five youth team players, on a night of torrential rain. "They've done really well and it's good that they've got a chance at this level," he declared.
However, it was 'old hands' Steve McCartan, Shaun Pratt and Matt Pendleton, introduced into the action by Paul West, who found the net in the 70th, 72nd and 82nd minutes.
Teenage striker James Brown tapped in the opener 16 minutes after the interval after good work by veteran Paul Davies.
Goalkeeper Damien Beattie and Mark Wolsey were the only regulars in Evesham's line-up, with the former producing several vital stops prior to Brown's opener.
There should be a more familiar look to the United starting line up for tonight's (Thursday) Worcester Senior Cup replay at Worcester City (7.45).
However, Mullen will have to plan for the replay and the home games against Cirencester on Saturday and Shepshed on Tuesday without the injured Phil Preedy and Richard Clark.
"We're down to the bare bones for tonight," said Mullen after Tuesday's win. "I might have to get permission from Worcester to make the numbers up on the bench.
"Saturday's match is more important to me, while Worcester have only cup matches to concentrate on."
Mullen will be hoping Pratt's hamstring's stand up to the strain - the reason behind Andy Hodgetts being given the nod at Hinckley last Saturday.
"The last thing I want is to lose him," Mullen said. "He is so direct and helps our game so much."
The Common Road chief was disappointed not to have taken three points off the leaders.
"They played us very well but we were by far the better team once we had levelled," he recalled. "I was disappointed that we weren't able to force the game a bit more but they were happy to hear the final whistle."
Former Bromsgrove duo Joey Beard and Andy Biddle could come into contention this weekend, while Mullen will be hoping Stuart Payne recovers from illness.
Just for the record, the youngsters who acquitted themselves so well on Tuesday were Matty Pearce, Scott Maybury, Jon Gisbourne, John Hill and scorer Brown.
