IN reply to Roger Thurston's letter (March 22) issue on his "cyclist survey", I am not surprised he saw no cyclists at mid-morning on a weekday. Most would be at work.
More people are being encouraged to cycle, especially for short journeys, the aim being to cut traffic congestion and pollution, which will make our roads safer and more pleasant places for cyclists, pedestrians and motorists alike.
At present, roads, and main roads especially, are very intimidating places for cyclists, and this is one of the reasons cycle lanes are being introduced countrywide.
Most cyclists would be happy not to feel the need for segregation, so if Mr Thurston wants to stop the proliferation of cycle lanes then he should campaign for his fellow motorists to treat cyclists with respect by always giving them plenty of room and keeping to the speed limits.
