EVESHAM town councillors are backing plans for cheeky entertainment at the Railway Hotel in Evesham.

In an effort to pull in the crowds, landlord Bill Preston wants to entertain the punters with scantily dressed men or women dancing in his premises from 8pm until 11pm on Saturday nights.

Now, he has applied to Wychavon District Council for a variation of his public entertainment licence. The application is for a trial period of eight weeks, but if successful, it could turn into a regular floorshow.

Mr Preston said: "It's just business. With so much competition in the town I have got to try everything to boost custom."

At present his licence "prohibits disorderly conduct on premises and dancing or singing which is of an obscene character or offensive.

"In addition any performance of a kind commonly known as a strip-tease act involving the removal of garments is also prohibited".

Mr Preston has given assurances that the dancers will keep their pants or a G-string on, rather than strip naked.

In addition entrance will be by payment only and events will not be advertised but restricted to "word of mouth" marketing.

Coun Jo Sandalls said: "The police have no problems and have promised to monitor the situation very closely.

"If it's for a trial period I can't see that we can refuse until we know what it is all about."

Coun Mike Worrall said: "They won't get the full Monty!"

The councillors comments now go forward to Wychavon District Council to decide whether to accept or refuse Mr Preston's plans.
