A REDDITCH pharmacist is prescribing himself a healthy dose of exercise as he prepares for the London Marathon in aid of a cancer charity, writes Julian Seva.
John Turner, 57, has decided to go the extra mile for The Prostate Cancer Charity after he had a cancer scare two years ago.
Last week was Prostate Cancer Awareness Week, designed to improve men's attitude towards their own health with regard to the disease.
In the UK, one in 12 men will develop prostate cancer in their lifetime and more than 20,000 men are diagnosed with the disease each year.
Mr Turner, who works at Carrington and Turner Chemists, Church Green West, said: "I had a prostate cancer scare two years ago. While in Warwick Hospital and afterwards I met other men with prostate cancer, some of whom are no longer with us.
"So in order to put something back I'm training to run the London Marathon on April 22 in aid of the Prostate Cancer Charity."
Mr Turner added: "I am looking forward to the marathon but with some trepidation."
This will be Mr Turner's first attempt at a full marathon although he has ran several half marathons in the past.
The pharmacist, who lives in Temple Grafton, hopes to raise £1,000 for the cause but needs sponsorship.
Anyone willing to sponsor Mr Turner can pick up forms at the chemist shop. Staff will also accept donations and cheques may be made payable to the Prostate Cancer Charity.
