VALE MP Peter Luff has tabled 21 Parliamentary questions, 20 of them to MAFF and one to the Prime Minister about the use of Throckmorton airfield.

He said: "I am not saying that it should not be used for this purpose.

"Indeed, it may now be inevitable and it may even be the best site.

"I do, though, have severe reservations about the risks and impact of the transportation of animal carcasses, often long distances. "The problem is that there was no consultation with the community and no attempt to answer their legitimate questions." He said his questions sought to address all the issues raised with him by angry local people and stressed it was vital to get written commitments on the issues involved.

Issues raised by Mr Luff in his questions include the length of time it will take for the buried animals to decay, how animals will be transported to Throckmorton for burial, and what will be done to prevent the spread of the disease.

He also wants to know what assessment has been made of the impact the burials will have on farms and property holders. He has also asked if there will be any health implications for people.

Mr Luff also wants confirmation that only animals culled to prevent the spread of foot and mouth will be buried at the site, rather than those confirmed as having the disease.
