NEARLY a dozen people have come forward to help eye patients at Kidderminster Hospital after an appeal in the Shuttle/Times and News.
The Worcestershire Association for the Blind has established an information desk for eye patients after receiving funding from the RNIB and Social Services. WAB hospital volunteers co-ordinator Rhian Thompson and volunteer Naomi Twaite show off some of the helpful items for eye patients.
Since November's appeal, 10 Wyre Forest people are now fully trained covering five clinics a week.
WAB hospital volunteers co-ordinator Rhian Thompson said: "The reception we have received from the consultants and staff within the eye department has been, and still is, enthusiastic and supportive.
"We have only been operating for a month, but we have already given support and guidance to 22 patients."
She added: "This has been in the form of leaflets about talking books and newspapers as well as benefit advice for pensioners.
"We are also providing information about small pieces of equipment which can help visually impaired people retain some independence.
"The help and generosity of the volunteers has been remarkable and it coincides with the views of the Adrian Mole author Sue Townsend, who only three weeks ago was declared blind and spoke about the value of the eye information desks."
WAB HQ is situated within walking distance of Worcester's Foregate Street train station and has a resources room stocked with equipment from talking microwaves to talking watches and clocks.
