STORY has it that during the BSE crisis, a butcher, in order to boost his dwindling trade, threw out a challenge to his customers. He hung pieces of beef from hooks fastened to the ceiling. The idea being that you paid £1 for a ticket and guessed the weight of the meat. The nearest to the correct weight, winning that joint. Unfortunately he misjudged his clientele, for whilst the majority of his customers liked a little flutter, they felt in this case the steaks were too high!
But I'm sure you won't feel so inhibited when you come along to the Reveller's (arch enemies of the couch potatoes) final event of this season, a casino evening.
You probably know the drill: on arrival you are given £1,000 (joke money) which you can gamble away on blackjack, roulette, dice or whatever. Wandering from table to table, your pulse racing, and whistling Luck be a Lady Tonight under your breath, and if your imagination stretches that far, the village hall could become Monte Carlo or Las Vegas.
The aim is to finish with the largest pot, by using skill, judgement and more than a little luck, to win a prize.
It must be stressed that with the prospect of possibly £1,000 changing hands on the turn of a card, the evening might not be suitable for people of an extremely nervous disposition.
The Revellers have requested that for this occasion, posh frocks and smart suits should be worn. After all, if the joint is raided you will want to look your best in front of the judge!
So come along, it should be a lot of fun. Saturday, April 21, at 7.30pm in Malvern Wells village hall. Tickets £5 to include your first £1,000 gambling money and a buffet supper. Contact Barbara Savery (01684) 562904 or Pat O'Malley (01684) 575682. Please collect your tickets by Wednesday, April 18.
