I RECENTLY watched a BBC Television programme called See Hear on Saturday for deaf people, which dealt with a visit to Cuba.
I was most impressed by the fair way in which the presenters dealt with the situation in that country. What I find absolutely incredible is that our Government has not done more to persuade the Americans to lift the economic blockade on Cuba, especially as this action has been condemned in successive United Nations resolutions.
As a Labour Party member, I would have hoped that Mr Blair and Mr Cook would have made extensive use of our "special relationship" to keep up the pressure on successive presidents to stop this vile persecution of the Cuban people.
As was illustrated in the film, the handicapped sections of the community suffer more than anyone else in these situations. Presumably the same sections suffer as a result of the economic blockade of Iraq.
Whatever happened to our ethical foreign policy? In the coming General Election, I hope all candidates will be asked about this question.
