ACTOR Michael Jayston is an observer of the relationship between mother and daughter in David Hare's play Amy's View.

As Frank, financial adviser to an ageing actress, Esme (Susannah York), he watches her emotional conflict with her daughter, Amy (Rebecca Lacey).

Heading for Malvern Theatres from April 16 to 21, the play tackles the themes of love, age and family relationships, combined with social commentary on the demise of theatre and traditional values.

"It's got a lot of humour in it and it's very moving as well. Quite a few youngsters enjoy watching it," said Jayston (pictured). "Frank is a bit of a nebulous character. He's devoted to Esme and he's handy to have around but you're never quite sure of the relationship between them. He makes cocoa for her and he's a sort of a dogsbody but he's also a bit of a villain."

Jayston's career has encompassed radio, film, theatre (from Shakespeare at the RSC to The Sound of Music) and television, including Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and Quiller.

He has not previously worked with Susannah York, although their paths crossed at Bristol Old Vic some years ago. The actress, whose film career includes The Killing of Sister George, Tom Jones and They Shoot Horses Don't They, also starred in the television dramas A Second Chance and We'll Meet Again.

Rebecca Lacey is familiar for her TV appearances as Dr George in Casualty and Hilary in May to December.

Jayston said he enjoyed working in TV but preferred the stage.

"Theatre is a different animal. You have a different audience each night. Sometimes they catch on to the jokes immediately and everything sails along. Another time it takes a bit longer," he said.
