ON Saturday the newly-formed Malvern Men's Hockey Club played their first ever game, when they visited Droitwich in a friendly fixture and came away triumphant after a 7-2 win.

With youth to the fore and a sprinkling of experience, Malvern opened the scoring through winger Chris Edwards.

Soon after, centre forward Peter Holmes deftly diverted in a shot from skipper Robin Longmore following a short corner routine.

Another short corner move resulted in Holmes converting his second before Droitwich pulled one back beating the unlucky Malvern keeper Jim Boocock.

Malvern then scored their best goal of the game when Longmore intercepted and a long clearance found the stick of the impressive 14 year old Mat Hodgkins, who delivered a superb early ball to Holmes who rounded the keeper to score his third and Malvern's fourth.

Droitwich pulled one back from a quickly taken short corner to leave the half time score 4-2.

With Shaun Kabani, Alan Sage and John McKeen ably supporting skipper Longmore at the back, Droitwich never looked like breaching the defence in the second half and Steve Dow, Adam Taylor and Mat Hodgkinson ran the show in midfield.

As Malvern interchanged their subs, Jamie Longmore gave more width to the left wing and Chris Edwards breaking in from the right scored his second goal.

Adam Taylor then converted a well-worked move before Mat Hutchinson squeezed the ball in from an acute angle to score Malvern's seventh and final goal.

This was an excellent first performance from what could be a very useful Malvern team.

Anyone interested in playing for the team should turn up at practice on a Wednesday evening between 6pm and 7pm at the Chase school astro pitch.

The club is currently looking towards a more comprehensive fixture list for next season whether it be in a league or on a friendly basis.
