AN animal rescue centre near Worcester is struggling to cope - and staff have blamed the continuing foot-and-mouth crisis.

Dave Lannie, a spokesman for Tibberton-based Danemere Animal Rescue, said he was becoming "desperate".

"We're limited to looking after six dogs, but at the moment there are 28 here," he said.

"We're bulging at the seams, even though we've got plenty of kennel space. In fact, we could fit in a lot more here, but the problem is the lack of funds."

Mr Lannie called on donors to dig deep and lift the centre out of the difficult situation.

"I'd say to anyone who is prepared to offer sponsorship, please do so," he added.

"And supporters can set up direct debit payments.

"But the reason why there are so many dogs here is that people aren't coming to visit.

"I'm sure it's because of the foot-and-mouth crisis. But we are open for business, and we need people to come and view the dogs, and to give them a new home."

Dogs of all ages and types from across Worcestershire and Birmingham have been sheltered at the centre.

Danemere Animal Rescue is open between 11am and 4pm from Thursday to Sunday. Telephone 01905 345655.
