A LEARNING scheme to be launched in Droitwich will enable students to create a bright future for town youngsters.

NEW College begins vocational courses on the Westlands estate after Easter.

One of the first courses is in home improvement.

Students can acquire skills in painting, decorating and possibly gardening.

They will be based at a Westlands property due for demolition - donated by Queen Street-based Spa Housing Association.

Once tutors are confident with the ability of students, the class will begin refurbishing a disused bungalow in the grounds of Westlands First School.

The property is to be transformed into a nurture centre for rising fives.

A Local Education Authority (LEA) spokeswoman said: "This is an exciting initiative, still in the early planning stages.

"The LEA is paying for a full-time teacher and the school is providing the building and additional resources.

"We are grateful to NEW College for giving its support and making the nurture centre a real community project.

"It will provide extra support for pupils who may be considered vulnerable or have social needs.

"Within the centre, they can continue their studies, while receiving extra support to develop social skills."

On Thursday, NEW College, which has campuses in Bromsgrove and Redditch, held an open day at Westlands Community Hall, off Farmers Way. More than 80 people attended.

Wychavon district councillor Roy Seabourne (Lab, Droit.West) said: "This scheme is offering brilliant opportunities to many people. Hopefully, the college can spread its wings in the community."

Organisers need equipment for the nurture centre. Firms which can donate decorating equipment, carpets or fittings, should call an LEA officer on (01905) 766653.
