On Sunday Bretforton went to Cheltenham to play in the county clubs tournament.
They had been drawn against some very strong teams who play in leagues above them, but they were looking forward to the challenge to come and maybe even a taster of the level they will be playing at next year when they move up a league.
Bretforton faced Cheltenham 1st who play in the premier division. With only 20 minutes per game anything could happen and Bret were hoping it was going to go their way.
The standard of the play was as high as expected, but Bret held their own ground well with opportunities for both teams to take the lead. Towards the end of the short game Cheltenham were awarded a short corner, which Bret knew was not good news. They had managed to keep out two previous shots, but Cheltenham desperately wanted to score and the resulting shot was unstoppable, but to Bret's credit it was the only goal of the game.
In their second game Bretforton faced Newent.
This was another good game. Bret had the upper hand throughout, but they were unable to make good use of the opportunities they created.
The match finished in a draw which means Bret had to win their next two games.
Cirencester were the next opposition and Bret were out to win this one to prove why they had won the league.
Cirencester scored the first goal, which made Bret even more determined to do something to prove their ability. A replay of the goal from the day before saw a ball pushed through by Wheeler to Corbett and this evened the score and put Bret back into the game. Towards the end of the time Bretforton were awarded a short corner and Wheeler managed to get the ball into the corner of the goal to the delight of her teammates.
It was all down to the last game against East Glos 1st, who Bretforton will face next year. Bret needed a win or a draw if they were to go through and put everything into the game. Unfortunately it was EG who managed to score the only goal of the match putting Bret out of the semi-finals.
The tournament was an excellent way to finish the season with some high standard enjoyable hockey being played.
