MONTHS of traffic chaos and fly-tipping have come to an end with the re-opening of a major waste site in Stourport. Bonemill dump site in Stourport.
The Worcestershire County Council-managed Bonemill site in Minster Road closed in early November for refurbishment work - and several dates for its planned re-opening have since passed.
A smaller waste disposal site at Hoobrook, Kidderminster, has been forced to bear the effects of Bonemill's closure - meaning huge tailbacks leading back to the ring road at weekends.
Several people unable to deposit their waste have taken to dumping it outside the gates at the Stourport site.
This led to warnings of prosecution for offenders by the Environment Agency in February.
But the county council's waste management contract manager Ian Holbrook, who is overseeing the revamp of the site by Severn Waste Services, said it had reopened on Tuesday morning.
Tony Dare, Wyre Forest District Council's cleansing manager, said the council had been feeling the effects of the Bonemill closure.
"There has been an increase in fly tipping and people asking us to remove bulky items.
"If people see a tailback at Hoobrook they're either going to dump the rubbish somewhere or ring us and ask us to take it away."
He added it was important the site had reopened for the Easter holidays as it was the start of the gardening season which produces lots of extra waste.
Mr Holbrook said bad weather in the winter had been a factor in the delayed opening of the Minster Road site.
Severn Waste Services have been carrying out major engineering work, making the site a split-level facility and installing compaction equipment.
