Broadway Golf Club
THE first medal of the season in division one saw Steve Gilks continue his run of good form when he won, on a countback, against the ever-improving Mark Stedman.
Gilks, who is now practising hard, carded a splendid one under par 71 gross (nett 67) to pip Stedman who took a gross 76 playing off nine. A double bogey six on the 17th proved costly for Stedman who, having reached a single figure handicap, now looks a far more accomplished player.
Third and fourth spot went to the O'Hagan brothers, Paul and Chris, who both carded nett 71. Paul won a countback with both players comfortably eclipsing their father, league team player Gerry O'Hagan, as proof that the next generation is ready to take over. Despite the recent bad weather the course played well and the players were mercifully blessed with dry weather.
In division two (handicap 12 and above) the spoils went to Stephen Leonard with an excellent net 68 playing off 15 (gross 83) followed by Graham Taylor (gross 92 nett 71) who beat Allan Gillespie on a countback. Fourth place went to Gerald Enderby who carded nett 72 playing off 17.
In the Famous Grouse foursomes there was a popular victory for Terry Sandalls and Ken Major who carded nett 65.5 beating into second place the fancied pairing of Shaun Thornhill and the in-form Steve Gilks (nett 67).
Third place went to Harry Roberts and Ross Lumsden with a nett 69.5 which included an epic nine on the third hole, an aberration which almost certainly cost them victory as they managed to negotiate the other 17 holes without incident. The smooth Billy Mayfair style putting stroke of Roberts proving most effective.
Fourth spot was grabbed by the steady combination of Paul Wragby and Steve Griffin, the latter being no stranger to the winners enclosure.
