At the fencing world youth championships in Gdansk, Poland, Peter Kirby, from North Littleton, Evesham, put in a fine performance before he was knocked out in the elimination stage.
The 16-year-old Chipping Campden School pupil was knocked out of the world championships by Patryk Palasz (POL). In a fight worthy of the world championships, Peter kept level point for point with the strong Pole.
The youngster kept his head and produced a well balanced tactical fight, never allowing his opponent to get an advantage of more than a couple of points. But gradually the better footwork of Palasz gave him enough room to go three hits upon the Briton.
Peter pulled this back to make it 12-14, but eventually lost the final point. The teenager had won four of his five preliminary fights to take 12 seed place for the elimination stage of the championships.
Mike Rayner, 16, from Moreton-in-Marsh, took one fight in the preliminaries, but couldn't count enough points to make the cut. Mike was placed 48th in the 2001 World Cadet Championships.
Peter was finally placed 20th in the 2001 world championships for cadet men's sabre. This is the second best British results so far.
