FAMILIES in a Worcestershire village are to benefit from a £75,000 windfall to develop a community centre.
The Lottery cash will be going towards a purpose-built community nursery and a family centre for Clifton upon Teme.
"This is great news for the village and surrounding area. It has really drawn the community together," said management team chairman Hilary Higton.
"It will no doubt help the long-term stability of the area, in light of recent concern for the economy in rural communities."
However, the total cost of the Early Years Centre project will be in the range of £110,000 and though the money will help, fund-raisers still have a lot of work to do to find the remaining cash.
The parties involved are looking to raise extra money by applying for local grants, organising fund-raising events and securing pledges of money and equipment from Worcestershire companies.
A ceilidh held at the village hall last month has already added more than £500 to the coffers.
It is anticipated that the village nursery will open in January 2002, if the money is raised in time.
"A big thank you to all those who have supported us so far," added Mrs Higton. "All the effort has paid off."
Villagers have also joined forces to raise money for St Kenelm's Church, which needs £30,000 for a restoration fund .
A village website has been launched so families can keep in touch with each other and a modern version of the Domesday Book has also been created
