IN reply to RG Spencer, (Evening News, April 9) The Conservatives didn't con anyone, they just wanted to make themselves look good, like any political party would do.
I suggest that the Conservatives would not split over Europe, but would conveniently stop criticising the EU when a more prominent issue arises, foot-and-mouth, for example.
It would be a shame to lose the Conservative Party. They provide hours of entertainment, especially William Hague with his inane voice.
The idea that "Europe" would remove British "democratic freedom" is an old one, but it has been disproved before "Europe" even existed.
Jean-Jacques Rousseau said: "The English people believes itself to be free... it is greatly mistaken."
Traditional Labour and Tory voters may be dissatisfied with "Europe", but Liberal Democrats shouldn't be, for Liberal Democrats are the most vociferous supporters of the EU in mainstream politics.
I also suggest that the UK Independence Party does not have "millions" of supporters, as will be proved in the forthcoming election.

Worcester.
