Kidderminster Harriers put up a fight at Chesterfield but could never claim to have deserved a result at the promotion chasers in a 1-0 defeat.
The home side could have had more goals but let Harriers off the hook on a number of occasions with poor finishing or the wrong final pass.
Jan Molby's side defended bravely against lively opposition but did little in an attacking sense despite an adventurous formation.
The nearest they came to a goal was a minute from time when the recalled Andy Ducros free-kick was tipped over.
Chesterfield won the game with a goal just before the half-time break after keeper Tim Clarke missed a corner and Luke Beckett eventually tapped home.
Harriers will be looking for some goals at home to Plymouth on Monday after two 1-0 defeats in a row.
