THE Foreign Affairs Select Committee Report on the European Union enlargement and Nice follow-up is devastating for Tony Blair and his Government, as it blows apart their attempt to play down the significance of the Nice Treaty.

This report accuses the Government of misleading the British people. The Prime Minister patronisingly tried to spin attention away from the real significance of the Nice Treaty, so the British public would not realise that the Nice Treaty has proved to be much more "substantial" than envisaged.

The creation of an EU Superstate is not supported by the mainstream majority of British people and, for that reason, Mr Blair is pursuing this policy by stealth.

The Conservative Party has repeatedly tried to raise the subject of CAP reform in the House of Commons, only to be sneered at by Robin Cook.

Yet again, on the fundamental issues, the Government have been shown up.

They have failed to grasp the real issues and have deliberately misled the British people. The mainstream majority of British people wants Britain to be in Europe, but not to be part of an EU Superstate.

This report makes it clear that the Nice Treaty is another step towards the creation of such a Superstate.

It's a vote of confidence in the Conservative Party's European policies, and a damning criticism of Mr Blair's lack of leadership and reliance on spin to cover his tracks.
