MALVERN Chess Club played Kidderminster away in the County League Division One but lost 2-4, Kidderminster white on the odd boards.
Individual results are given below, Malvern names first: 1 B Turner 1, J Friar 0; 2 G Herbert 0, M Bissell 1; 3 I Clarke 0, J Wrench 1; 4 J Knee , J Link ; 5 D Spencer , M Riley ; 6 M Ginger 0, C Billinge 1.
Brian Turner faced an unusual opening on board one and countered by playing the centre, managing to build a better pawn structure. The white pieces became entangled leading to the loss of a piece and the game.
On board two, Maurice equalised in the opening then when Geoffrey delayed castling, launched an attack winning a pawn. When the position simplified to a queen and pawn endgame the extra pawn became decisive.
Playing against a Vienna opening on board three, Ian made a mistake in the early middle game weakening his position. White then piled on the pressure against the castle king and broke through forcing Ian's resignation.
John Knee on board four played his favourite English Opening and Gerald became saddled with an isolated queen's pawn. When the endgame was reached, John stood better but as the match result was already decided he agreed a draw.
Denis played the Scandinavian Defence on board five and exchanged his black squared bishop for a knight. White brought pressure on the queen's side and against the castled king but after some exchanges a draw was agreed.
On board six Maurice won a pawn in a Colle but this allowed black attacking chances and he set up a combination which won a piece and the game.
