IN the Bromsgrove and Redditch Table Tennis League last week the Newton Works A team of Mark Fiddian, Chris Maiden and Michael Kendall enhanced their chances of winning the Division One title with an emphatic win over Barnt Green A, winning 10-0.
Newton Works B, however, had a much harder match against Droitwich B, just getting home 6-4.
Gary Jackson was the star for Newton, winning his three games. He was well backed up by his team mate Alan Hall who won two. They also teamed up to win the doubles. For Droitwich, Tony Birch did the best, winning two, with Don Evans and Gordon Nicklin winning one each.
The two bottom teams, Hillcrest A and SPSP, met at Hillcrest. Arthur Bartram did the best for the home team, winning his three games and Alan McCloughlan won two.
For SPSP Phil Govier had a good night, winning two, with Sam Lloyd and Lester Winterbourne getting one each.
With the score at 5-4 to Hillcrest, SPSP needed to win the doubles to get a draw, but Bartram and McCloughlan beat Winterbourne and Govier 21-19, 23-21.
In Division Two, the Barnt Green B team of Jason McFall, Steve Hore and John Davies had an easy 9-1 win over Droitwich C.
Barnt Green Hornets beat Droitwich B 3-2, thanks to Ivor Anderson winning his three games, with Ian Anderson and Chris Garner getting two each. Ivor and Ian also won the doubles. Simon Tibke got Droitwich's two wins.
Lickey Panthers, at home to Studley Road Nomads, had a good 7-3 win. Geoff Unitt got three great wins for Lickey with John Dale and Chris Farrier getting two each. Bernard Leech and Jeff Lines won one each for Studley and then joined up to win the doubles.
Studley Road Terriers beat bottom team Newton Works C 7-3 with two wins each from captain John Dignum, Peter Hartles and Steve Gascoigne, plus the doubles.
Brian Askey, Newton's number one had a great night, winning all his games.
