THE painstaking process of restoring famous wall and ceiling murals at Hanbury Hall, near Droitwich, is complete.

The painted ceiling in the Grand Hall, which depicts the four seasons, has been surveyed, cleaned and restored.

The ceiling mural, believed to be by Mark Anthony Hauduroy, dates back to around between 1710 and 1718.

The painstaking work took more than eight weeks and forms part of a three-stage project funded by the National Trust and English Heritage.

Hanbury Hall hopes to continue the project with the full restoration of stunning staircase murals depicting Greek mythology, by Sir James Thornhill.

However, more funds are required.

Property manager Stewart Alcock said: "The result of the work has surpassed all expectations, and most importantly the mural is now safe for another 50 years.

"The details are clearly visible and visitors will be in for a wonderful treat."

Hanbury Hall celebrates its tercentenary year in 2001 and to promote this the National Trust is offering reduced admission fees.

The estate opens this Sunday.
