THE numbers of reported crime in the town centre have fallen by almost 100 in the last 12 months, figures have revealed.
Beat manager Pc Robin White revealed how crime had dropped during a town centre partnership meeting.
He said between April 1999 and March 2000, the number of reported crimes was 827 - but in the last 12 months up until March 31, the number was 737.
Pc White said the figures included all different types of crime in and around the town centre.
He said: "It is quite a substantial reduction.
"I simply do not know any reasons why there has been such a reduction in the amount of reported crime."
Pc White said an alliance consisting of town centre licensees and a Kingfisher Centre retail crime operation had both been launched in the last 12 months.
