BUSINESSES and organisations in Herefordshire and Worcestershire are being invited to enter the 2001 National Safety Awards Scheme.

Six organisations from the two counties are in line for the British Safety Council awards so far, but there is still time for further entrants.

Applications are invited from large and small enterprises, from the public and private sectors.

Winners must have lower-than-average accident rates, good safety policies and safety plans and commitment to health and safety at the highest level.

They must also detail their health and safety officers' qualifications and provide details of two significant advances in health and safety for the year.

"The National Safety Awards highlight organisations that reach the top levels of health and safety." said Sir Neville Purvis, the Council's director general. "They're a mark of a proven and significant achievement in safety standards."

There are also special categories for small organisations and for contractors or suppliers nominated by larger organisations as part of a good neighbouring scheme.

Winning companies are invited to attend a banquet in London on Friday, May 18.

Entry forms are available for Annette Cross, on 0208 600 5593.
