Evesham Golf Club
EVESHAM Golf Club has won the Droitwich Shield for the first time in the club's history.
The scratch foursomes competition for Worcestershire clubs produced a thrilling finale at Stourbridge last Sunday.
Opponents Gray Hill had been totally outplayed by Craig Moss and Warwick Holland in a 7 and 5 defeat, but they hit back to hand Stuart Ridley and Daniel Haines a one-hole reverse.
These results left the destiny of the trophy in the hands of club captain Gary Bristow and Steve Wood and the pair looked good for victory as they went ahead by two holes.
Their opponents hit back to level the contest, but then went out of bounds on the penultimate hole. However, Wood and Bristow were unable to take advantage and a half in six left the final all square at the last. A large gathering of spectators made for a tense atmosphere, but a par four from the Evesham duo was good enough to land this prestigious trophy.
