Ian equalised quickly on board three with a Philador Defence and then gained central pressure with his knights. After some middle game complications he gained an open field and set up enough threats to force Ray's resignation.
John played his favourite English Opening on board four and Alan lost a pawn when his queen's side came under attack. When the game simplified to a rook and pawn endgame Alan resigned when about to lose another pawn.
On board five Arnold played a quiet line against Denis' Scandinavian Defence. An ending was eventually reached where black had a good knight against white's bad bishop. This allowed Denis to create an unstoppable passed pawn, winning easily.
Maurice, in a Colle on board six, opened up the king's side with a pawn advance. He then sacrificed a bishop to destroy Ken's defence and force resignation.
