THE organisers of Worcester's carnival procession are challenging the city to "support it or lose it" this summer.

A decision could be made to scrap the event, which has been running for more than 35 years, unless people enter floats within the next seven days.

The carnival committee has sent out 45 forms to firms and groups which have previously shown an interest in the procession, but only three have replied.

Twelve floats toured around the city last year but, in its 1976 heyday, the event attracted 96.

"I just feel this is such a tragedy," said Mike Dandey, publicity officer for the committee.

"It seems a shame that we should have to consider cancelling the procession."

The event is due to take place on Saturday, July 7, but the committee needs to know now if it will be running or if it is a non-starter.

"There's so much planning involved in the event," said Mr Dandey. "We need to organise road closures with the police. We have bands booked and we need to find marshals to walk with the floats.

"I would urge people to decide if they really want a procession or not. But it would be a terrible shame to lose it because generations of families have grown up with it."

Football, cricket and netball tournaments, golf competitions, a fun-run and a treasure walk organised in the run-up to the Carnival had all been well supported, Mr Dandey said.

Mayor of Worcester, Councillor Mary Drinkwater, said it would be a terrible loss.

"It's such a wonderful event that gives so much pleasure for children and raises money for charity," she said.

"The carnival is part of Worcester's heritage and we're very lucky to have it. We must support them."
