WORCESTER oarsman Matthew Beechey is celebrating a call-up for the first World Cup rowing regatta of the season in the United States.
The Worcester Rowing Club member was due to fly out today for the regatta in Princeton, which starts on Friday.
He will compete in the lightweight coxless four with Steve Lee, John Warnock and Mike Hennessy. Beechey and Lee finished second to Warnock and Hennessy in the trials at Hazewinkel, Belgium, recently, and the pairs will combine for this event, the first World Cup regatta to be held outside Europe.
They will be joined in Princeton by Olympic gold medallists Matthew Pinsent and James Cracknell in the coxless pairs, and Matthew Wells in the single sculls.
Beechey won a silver in the eights at the World Championships last year in Zagreb.
The Worcestershire oarsman hopes to use the event to boost his claims to race in this year's world championships to be held in Lucerne in August.
