A 91-YEAR-OLD driver had a miraculous escape after his foot jammed on the accelerator, sending his car somersaulting into a neighbour's garden.

The freak accident saw Bill Andrews' VW Polo speed out of his driveway in reverse and plunge 10ft down a drop.

The vehicle ended on its roof with petrol pouring out of it and Mr Andrews trapped upside down.

Neighbours from Hillside Close, Ronkswood, rushed to his rescue yesterday afternoon and it took three men to free his foot.

Mr Andrews suffered minor injuries and shock but was allowed out after treatment at nearby Ronkswood Hospital.

"That is the first accident I have ever had," said Mr Andrews, who has been driving since he was 25.

"I had just got a new driving licence through in January.

"I thought I would just go for a little drive. While I was backing out my foot was on the accelerator and somehow got jammed.

"All I knew was that the engine was roaring and I went over the pavement, bumped over a little wall and the car was on its roof. I was upside down with my leg jammed."

Neighbour Serena Wilkes, into whose front garden Mr Andrews' crashed, said her daughter often played out there.

"It's lucky she wasn't there today," she added.

Another neighbour, David Pagan, described it as an amazing escape.

"I ran out and all the neighbours' doors opened.

"The were trying to fish him out and he was hanging by his seat belt. Petrol was pouring out.

"If there had been a spark he could have been roasted alive. He's extremely lucky."

Mr Andrews said he did not intend to drive again.

"It would be daft," he added.
