"IT fell off the back of a lorry"- the expression must have been heard many times at the old police station in Deansway, Worcester.
I can never hear it without remembering the late Alf Tolley, a dear old friend and former colleague on the outside staff of Worcester Guildhall.
Alf was leaving work one evening when he came across a huge cheese lying in the road in Deansway which quite clearly had literally fallen from the back of a lorry.
It was heavy and cumbersome but Alf managed to manipulate it into the nearby police station and hand it in to the lost property department.
About a week later, police were urgently trying to locate Alf and sought him all over the city.
Apparently, the cheese was rather ripe and its smell had permeated every corner of the station.
Alf was desperately needed to claim and remove his find without the formality of waiting any longer to see if there was any prior claimant.
