THE dog warden caring for unwanted Droitwich Spa pets says the number of stray dogs in her patch has reached crisis point.
Wychavon District Council is so concerned about the increase it may be forced to reconsider its non-destruction policy.
In recent weeks, dog warden Pip Singleton has seen an almost 100 per cent rise in the number of strays.
The upsurge has been attributed to foot and mouth restrictions.
The council believes it's possible dogs are being abandoned because some owners are frustrated at the limited number of places they can walk animals, owing to rural footpath closures.
The number of people coming forward to adopt dogs has fallen dramatically and kennels are at bursting point.
Pip said: "I'm pleading with dog owners to be patient and not to abandon their animals.
"We understand how difficult it can be to find suitable places to walk dogs with the restrictions - but please persevere.
"People are not coming forward to home dogs because they think the kennels are closed.
"There are currently around 200 dogs waiting for people to offer them good, caring homes."
The Spa's nearest home is Danemere Pet Rescue, in Tibberton.
The centre is full and desperately wants residents to consider taking home a canine companion.
