THE future of a Redditch firm established 150 years ago could be in jeopardy if the foot and mouth crisis continues, writes Becky Proctor.

Barretts of Feckenham, which sells camping, hiking and horse riding gear, has been hit severely and trade has dropped by up to 50 per cent, forcing managers to take drastic action.

Up to 30 members of staff have been given reduced working hours and management and directors have taken a 10 per cent cut in wages in an attempt to keep the business afloat.

Director Martin Ludford said: "The products we sell cater for campers, walkers and horse riders. But obviously because a lot of camp sites, footpaths and bridleways are closed due to the foot and mouth, people are not taking part in the pursuits and not buying equipment."

"Since it started we have lost 20 per cent of our trade and sometimes as much as 50 per cent. The Easter weekend was particularly disappointing."

The store began as a one-man saddlery and soon expanded to become the place it is today, with three other shops across the country.

Mr Ludford said: "Our business rate relief has been deferred but we still have to pay it. Redditch Council is not considered to be a rural district to allow complete business rate relief. But here we are surrounded by fields."

He added: "If this goes on for a long time then the very future of this business could be in jeopardy."
